Sunrise light shines on Fort Rock and Gray Rabbitbrush flowers on a cool morning in Central Oregon's High Desert. Approximately 100,000 years ago, the area near Fort Rock sat at the bottom of a large lake. This unique geologic feature was created when when a volcano erupted beneath the lake and deposited basalt magma in a ring shape around the vent. Over time the waves on the lake eroded one side of the ring, which can be seen in this photo. The ring of Fort Rock is approximately 4,460 feet (1,360 m) in diameter and 200 feet (60 m) tall.
