#1 Finding a Way

Finding a Way

Warm sunset light illuminates waves and rocks as a gentle tropical breeze drifts through a stand of coconut palm trees at Po'olenalena Beach in Maui, Hawaii. This beach is usually busy with weddings, proposals and portrait sessions, but on this particular evening, I was the only one there! Pure paradise! #2 Pure Imagination

Beautiful fall colors at the world famous Laceleaf Maple (Acer palmatum) Tree on a foggy autumn morning at the Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, Oregon.

Beautiful fall colors at the world famous Laceleaf Maple (Acer palmatum) Tree on a foggy autumn morning at the Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, Oregon. Originally planted in 1968, this tree showcases the eye catching shapes and colors of the Laceleaf Japanese Maple. The first time I was able to see this tree with my own eyes, I said to myself, "How can this be real? It looks like something from my imagination!" I can assure you the tree is real and seeing it in person is an amazing experience! Many people consider the Portland Japanese Garden to be one of the most beautiful gardens outside of Japan. If you are ever in Portland, it's definitely worth stopping by. Click here to read my blog article about photography at the Portland Japanese Garden. #3 Above the Clouds

Above the Clouds

Sunset alpenglow illuminates Mount Adams and a field of summer wildflowers (lupine and paintbrush) in the Goat Rocks Wilderness of Washington. I'm often asked which photograph from my galleries is my favorite. It's difficult for me to pick one, but this photo has emerged as my favorite, since it captures everything I’m trying to achieve as an artist. There are three reasons why this photo is so special to me: 1) The primary goal of my art is to convey a peaceful and calm feeling to the viewer, and I believe “Above the Clouds” achieves this objective. 2) I created the photo in the wilderness, which is a place I’m passionate about. 3) My wife was sitting next to me that evening, which makes it even more meaningful. #4 Lavender Dreams

Lavender Dreams

The Milky Way rises above Mt Hood and a beautiful lavender field in the Hood River Valley of Oregon. During the summer of 2021, I spent a night photographing the lavender fields and night sky during the peak bloom of the lavender flowers. It was a magical evening, and the stars and lavender were absolutely beautiful. I hope when you view this photo you can smell the fragrant aroma of the lavender flowers. I believe the lavender fields of Oregon rival those in Provence, France and are definitely worth with a visit. The fields in Provence are larger, but they don’t have any glacier covered mountains in the background! Lavender Valley Farms is one of the best lavender farms in Oregon and is just a short drive from Portland. This spot is quite popular with Instagram models and portrait / landscape photographers. The stunning lavender fields and excellent view of Mt Hood are an unbeatable combination. The best time to visit Lavender Valley Farms is late June to early August and if you are on the Mt Hood Fruit Loop during the summer season, be sure to stop by! #5 Drift

Drift

The arc of the Milky Way galaxy rises above the volcanic crater of Haleakala on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Also visible in this panoramic photo are the summits of the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the Big Island. I created this photo during a short window of time before sunrise when the Milky Way is visible and the sunrise colors just start to appear on the horizon. The summit of Haleakala is a very popular place at sunrise, but if you arrive early on a clear morning, the stargazing is outstanding. The cool temperatures, clear air and dark skies make the stars exceptionally vibrant just before sunrise. Visiting the summit of Haleakala for sunrise is an unforgettable experience which is enjoyed by hundreds of dedicated people each morning. Since this activity has become very popular with with tourists, a reservation is now required to drive up the road to the summit for sunrise. Information about Haleakala sunrise reservations can be found here. If you decide to go, make sure you bring your jacket! It's usually 30-40 degrees cooler at the summit than at the beaches down below. Fine Art Limited Edition of 100 - ©2020 by Scott Smorra

#6 Rowena Sunrise

Rowena Sunrise

The first rays of sunlight shine down over a field of Arrowleaf Balsamroot at Rowena Crest, Oregon in the Eastern Columbia River Gorge. In early spring, the eastern end of the gorge is one of the first places in the region where the wildflowers begin to bloom. After a long Pacific Northwest winter, seeing these stunning wildflowers and feeling the warm sun on your face is very refreshing! Fine Art Limited Edition of 100 - ©2013 by Scott Smorra

#7 Eternity

Eternity

The Milky Way and millions of other stars rise above Mt Jefferson, an alpine lake and a field of summer wildflowers (Indian paintbrush and heather) in the Mt Jefferson Wilderness of Oregon. Over the past 15 years, I have visited this special location several times and have developed a deep connection with this mountain paradise. My goal with this photo was to capture the feeling of solitude and unending time that I often experience when I see the Milky Way Galaxy in the wilderness. I feel very lucky to have spent a night out watching the stars in Jefferson Park in the summer of 2019. At the time, I had no idea this area would be directly impacted by a wildfire (Lionshead fire) the following year. In September 2020, are rare and intense Pacific Northwest windstorm created 50-60+ mph east winds and humidity in the single digits. As the winds intensified, several wildfires burning on the Western slopes of the Cascade Range turned into raging infernos which burned more than 1 million acres of Oregon forest in 3 days. The fires eventually pushed into several towns in the Cascade foothills which led to catastrophic loss of life and property. More than 500,000 Oregonians were displaced by the fires and it breaks my heart to think about the impact that the fires have had on each one of these people. #8 Lavender Light

Lavender Light

Mt Hood towers above a beautiful field of lavender at sunrise in the Hood River Valley of Oregon. Photographing the sunrise at this location was an amazing experience. The sweet aroma of the lavender, the sound of thousands of buzzing bees and the glow of light on the mountain made for an unforgettable morning. Lavender (scientific name: Lavandula) is a flowering member of the mint family and there are 47 known varieties. Lavender originated in the Mediterranean region, but is now cultivated all over the world. In the United States, the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Northern California) is where most lavender is grown. There are dozens of lavender farms in the PNW, but only a few have amazing mountain views, like the one in this picture. Fine Art Limited Edition of 100 - ©2021 by Scott Smorra

#9 Ascend

Early morning light illuminates Mt Hood and a thready altocumulus lenticularis (lenticular) cloud on a cold and snowy winter morning.

Bring the beauty of Mt Hood to your home with this limited edition print from Scott Smorra Photography's Black and White Collection. Order your print today! Early morning light illuminates Mt Hood and a thready altocumulus lenticularis (lenticular) cloud on a cold and snowy winter morning. I really enjoyed watching the sunrise light and lenticular clouds from this quiet meadow near the mountain. I hope when you view this photo you feel some of the peaceful calm I experienced out there that morning. It definitely wasn't calm at the summit though, since you can see the strong winds blowing the snow off the summit! If you have ever climbed Mt Hood on the South Route, this photo gives a great look at the route including: Palmer Glacier, Illumination Rock, Illumination Saddle, Devil's Kitchen, Hogsback, Pearly Gates and Old Chute. #10 Through the Glass

Through the Glass

Glacial ice on a beached iceberg creates the perfect frame for towering peaks and icebergs in the fjords of Patagonian Chile. The foreground ice was amazingly clear and it picked up a lot of the surrounding light and color. This ice forms at the bottom of glaciers when the weight of all the snow and ice above compresses the ice and removes the air bubbles. It is stunning to see in person! #10 (tie) Waiting and Wondering

Waiting and Wondering

A beautiful Caribbean sunrise at a secluded beach in Tulum, Mexico. The colors in the water and sky on that morning were stunning! Tulum is one of my favorite areas in the Riviera Maya of Mexico. White sand beaches lined with coconut palm trees and very few people make it the perfect place for relaxation. The 80 degree water during the winter months is also a big attraction for people traveling from colder climates. Tulum is a great place for landscape photography with the colorful Caribbean water and vibrant sunrises. Fine Art Limited Edition of 50 - ©2012 by Scott Smorra
