This is an abstract image of air bubbles and cracks in a thin sheet of ice. During a backpacking trip in the Goat Rocks, the overnight temperatures often dipped below freezing. I found this frozen pool of water at the base of one of the melting alpine snowfields. I was originally drawn to the shapes of the bubbles, but as set up the tripod to frame this comp, the cracks in the ice began forming. The bottom of the pool of water was about 10 inches below and also provided some interesting abstract shapes.
An early fall sunrise at Sparks Lake in the Central Oregon Cascades, September 2012. The smoke from the Pole Creek Fire (near Sisters, OR) can be seen billowing up near Broken Top on the right and this smoke contributed to the haziness seen in this image.
